Benicar and Villous Atrophy

On behalf of Joel Rhine of Rhine Law Firm, P.C. posted June 21, 2017

Benicar (olmesartan medoxomil) was developed by the Japanese pharmaceutical giant, Daiichi Sankyo, and marketed as a miracle drug for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). But, since its approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002, many serious side effects have come to be associated with the medication.

One of the most harmful side effects of Benicar use is villous atrophy. Villous atrophy is the erosion of the villi—tiny, finger-like tentacles that line the wall of the small intestine. The villi are a vital part of a healthy digestive system because they absorb nutrients from the food we eat. Without healthy and active villi, a person can basically starve to death while eating a balanced diet. Symptoms of villous atrophy include abdominal pain, nausea, chronic diarrhea, fatigue, extreme weight loss, and general malnutrition. Almost 2,000 lawsuits have already been filed against Daiichi Sankyo on behalf of patients who have suffered severe side effects from Benicar use. The claims allege that the drug’s manufacturer failed to warn doctors of the adverse side effects associated with its use, and that doctors wouldn’t have prescribed it had they known of the side effects. Pharmaceutical corporations have a duty to thoroughly test the medications they produce before putting them on the marketplace. If they know of a harmful side effect caused by a drug, they have an obligation to let the public know of that possibility.

If you were prescribed Benicar and suffered any adverse side effects, you may be entitled to compensation. But, filing a successful civil claim against a giant pharmaceutical company like Daiichi Sankyo is no easy task. This is why it is vital that you have an experienced product liability attorney on your side.
