Lipitor-Induced Diabetes Warning Issued By FDA

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning in February 2012 that Lipitor may cause Type 2 diabetes. The risk for developing Type 2 diabetes with use of Lipitor seems to be higher in women. Type 2 diabetes is a disease that affects approximately 27 million Americans. Lipitor is marketed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Inc. Lipitor is the brand name for the cholesterol-lowering drug atorvastatin calcium. It is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin), and is designed to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. The Lipitor Type 2 diabetes lawsuits allege that Lipitor increases the risk for developing Type 2 diabetes in women. The lawsuits have alleged Pfizer was negligent and did not sufficiently warn those using the medication nor the medical community about the potential serious health risks involved.

Lipitor Articles And Publications

A noted "potential" link in statin use in women and Type 2 diabetes was published in Archives of Internal Medicine in the January 2012 edition. The study concluded that women who took statins like Lipitor were more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than women who did not. These results are particularly alarming in women who have no other risk factors for diabetes. Other articles have made the same reports:
