New Law in NC Requires General Contractor License Numbers

Construction Workers’ Rights in North Carolina

Every year, emergency rooms across the country fill up with people who suffered serious falls at work—but they are not the only danger when it comes to construction sites in our state. In North Carolina as of January 2018, struck-by incidents took the lead in causing the most fatal accidents on construction sites, narrowly beating falls. Struck-by incidents occur when a worker is injured by forcible contact with an object or piece of equipment, such as a vehicle.  These injuries and deaths are made more likely by all the highway work that is being completed. According to the N.C. Department of Labor, construction continues to be the most hazardous industry in the state. Read the rest »

Construction Worker Falls Six Stories in Wilmington

Tragedy struck Wilmington’s Historic District last Friday when a 32-year-old construction worker fell from scaffolding while working on the Cape Fear Hotel Apartments. The Wilmington Fire Department says the accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. while the man was installing brick veneer on the senior living building, which was originally constructed in 1924. The worker was in stable condition when evacuated from the scene, but died later at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The North Carolina Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health division has launched an investigation into the accident. Read the rest »

Third Party Claims: Workplace Injuries

Employers have a duty to provide a work environment that protects the health, safety, and welfare of employees. In many instances, an employee who is injured on the job has no recourse outside of the North Carolina Workers’ Compensation Act. According to a joint release on new residential construction in January 2015 from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, privately-owned housing units increased 8.1 percent and new housing starts increased 18.7 percent above the January 2014 estimates.
