Meet Me at the Crossroads
Wilmington is a beautiful city; with our museums, aquarium, beaches, and shopping centers, there is a lot for people to do. Our coastline has thousands of tourists flocking to visit every year. Add those visitors to the 100,000-plus people who already live here, and things can get crowded.
Wilmington residents have seen how much busier our roads have gotten over the past few years. So what are the worst roads in Wilmington? And what kinds of accidents does this otherwise beautiful area see most?
Worst Congested Roads in Wilmington
At times, it can seem as though every road in Wilmington is congested. Aggressive drivers who are in a rush, distracted drivers, and impaired drivers end up causing a number of rear-end collisions in crowded conditions. Rear-ends are by far the most common type of accident in Wilmington, but some roads see more than others.
The 4.3-mile stretch of College Road that lies between Gordon Road and Wilshire Boulevard is one of the worst roads to travel on in Wilmington. In a two-year timespan between 2014 and 2016, there were a total of 462 rear-end collisions here. That’s almost 20 accidents a month! The intersection of South College Road and Randall Parkway is particularly bad on this stretch, due to the close proximity of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and the addition of students to the vehicle and bicycle traffic.
Faring a little better, but not by much, is the 4.4 miles of road found on Market Street between Third Street and College Road. During the same time period, this strip of road saw 269 rear-end accidents. That’s over 11 accidents every single month. But the worst intersection in this area? Market and New Centre Drive by far, due to the car wash and several big retailers there, including Target and Walmart.
Of course, there’s one highway on which sirens can be heard throughout the day—U.S. 17 from Washington Acres Road to Sloop Point Loop. It’s not surprising, considering this is a major coastal artery for people traveling through Hampstead. Between the years of 2014 and 2016, there were 149 rear-end accidents. That’s likely to increase in the future.
The biggest problem, according to Wilmington residents, is the road expansion in recent years, with development going on all the time. Unfortunately, new roads and better rerouting have not been finished at the same pace, forcing many vehicles onto roads that are not equipped to handle them.
The Deadliest Intersection in Our Area
While congestion can be a bit of a pain at times, and rear-end accidents can certainly lead to serious injury, there is one intersection in Columbus County that has been identified as the deadliest by residents and law enforcement alike. This is the intersection at Highways 11 and 87.
In four years, between 2007 and 2011, this intersection was the location of four deadly crashes. In 2013, it took the lives of two people who were visiting from Louisiana.
The traffic in this particular area has prompted residents and commuters to ask the Columbus County Board of Commissioners to install traffic lights. Currently, the intersection is controlled by stop signs, which are often ignored. Unfortunately, after a Department of Transportation-traffic engineer studied the area, he wrote that there was still not enough traffic to warrant installing traffic lights.
Getting Help After a Traffic Accident in Wilmington
No one wants to get into a rear-end collision on their way home from work, particularly when it results in concussion or whiplash. Traveling dangerous roads, like the intersection of Highway 11 and 87, can even take someone away from their family forever.
While certain government agencies may be slow to react, there is something victims can do after a crash in Wilmington.
Speak to an attorney when injuries occur in any accident that was not your fault. Whether you want to claim compensation for medical bills and time lost from work, or want to file for wrongful death after losing a loved one, a personal injury lawyer can help you claim the compensation you may be entitled to.
