Beware – Nationwide Ground Beef Recall

On behalf of Joel Rhine of Rhine Law Firm, P.C. posted September 21, 2018

Kansas-based Cargill Meat Solutions has issued a nationwide recall of approximately 132,606 pounds of its ground beef products that were produced and packaged on June 21st, 2018. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is urging consumers to check their freezers for ground beef with “EST. 86R” printed inside the USDA inspection mark.

This recall was prompted by the death of one person and the illness of 17 others linked to consumption of the meat. Officials fear that the ground beef was made from chuck that was possibly contaminated with Escherichia coli 026.

Symptoms of Escherichia Coli 026 Infection

The most common symptoms of Escherichia coli 026 infection are (often bloody) diarrhea and vomiting. Positive diagnosis can be determined by testing a stool sample. Treatment involves vigorous rehydration, and symptoms usually subside within a week. However, some victims develop a more severe infection.

Another ailment associated with Escherichia coli 026 infection is hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS is a type of kidney failure that occurs most often in children under 5 years old, elderly adults, and people with compromised immune systems. Symptoms include bruising easily, decreased urine output, and pale complexion. People experiencing such symptoms are advised to seek emergency medical attention immediately.
