Representing Victims of IVC Complications

The Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) is a large vein in the middle of the abdomen that returns blood from the lower body to the heart. An IVC filter is a basket-like device made of many wires that is inserted into the IVC in order to trap blood clots that break loose from veins in the lower body. The IVC prevents the blood clots from travelling from the lower body into the lungs and other major organs, and eventually the blood clots are supposed to dissipate. A blood clot that makes its way into the lungs is known as a pulmonary embolism (PE), which can be a life-threatening medical condition.

Since the early 2000s, IVC filters have been commonly used in patients who are at risk of developing PE and cannot take blood-thinners; however, over the past several years, many patients have reported the development of adverse complications as a result of an IVC filter. In 2010, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a safety warning to physicians cautioning that the devices could be subject to migration in the body, detachment of the device’s components, perforation of organs, and fracture of the device.

If you or a loved one developed injuries as a result of the installment of an IVC filter, contact the attorneys of Rhine Law Firm, P.C. today at (910) 772-9960 to discuss your legal options.

IVC Filter Litigation

IVC Filter Lawsuits are currently being filed against C.R. Bard and Cook Medical, the two main manufacturers of the filters. The plaintiffs claim that the manufacturers of the IVC filters were negligent in the design and manufacturing processes of the product, and that they failed to warn of the risk involved in installing an IVC filter. The products that have been shown to cause adverse complications in patients include:

  • The Cook Gunther Tulip IVC filter;
  • The Cook Celect IVC filter;
  • The C.R. Bard G2 IVC filter;
  • The C.R. Bard G2 Express IVC filter; and
  • The Bard Recovery IVC filter;

If a doctor used any of these products in the treatment of your PE and you subsequently developed medical complications, you may be legally entitled to compensation for past and future medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages. In addition to gaining compensation for damages, by filing a C.R. Bard IVC filter lawsuit or a Cook Medical IVC filter lawsuit, you can hold these companies responsible for their actions and prevent them from injuring others.
